How to write a winning nomination

Selecting a winner can be a really tough job and our judges can find this easier if a nomination is written clearly. Winners of our awards are often the ones where the nomination really stands out, not only for the nominee's contribution, but also because the nomination is structured and well written.

To help you do this, we suggest you aim to follow a structured approach, which we have set out as an example below, using ‘Chris' as our fictional nominee.

  • Summary:
    I am nominating ‘Chris' for the innovation award for his idea and implementation of new customer service facilities in our centre.
  • Purpose of the nomination and the category you are nominating for:
    Chris actions in this clearly demonstrate ‘Innovation' and I believe he should be recognised for this.
  • Describe the situation:
    Describe the situation in which your nominee's behaviour demonstrated this category and how that behaviour helped you or improved the situation for others (in this example you would include details of the new facilities and how these were implemented)
  • Describe the outcome / result of this action:
    Describe how Chris' action has made a valuable contribution to Land Securities or your team (in this example you may see an increase in footfall, higher number of return shopper visits).

Obviously not every nomination will follow the above example completely, but trying to cover as many of the points as possible will help you towards a structured nomination.

Other tips for writing your nomination:

  • People into Action is based on people displaying exceptional behaviours that promote either one of our five core values or our ethos of corporate responsibility, environmental awareness and strong team work. For more information on this, please look at the ‘Our awards' page.
  • Give as much detail as possible, including examples or occasions when a nominee has displayed this behaviour. Has this person received feedback supporting your nomination? Have they been nominated previously?
  • A two-line nomination is unlikely to give the judges enough information to judge your nominee fairly - give as much detail, as clearly as possible, to give your nominee more chance to succeed.
  • Use clear, concise, professional language.
  • The majority of nominations are in the Customer Service and Excellence categories - could your nominee's behaviour be demonstrating one of the others: Respect; Integrity; Innovation; Corporate Responsibility; Environmental or Team?
